sinceautomationfunctionshardlychangeinthelifetimeofasubstation,iec61850standardisesthenamesofthedataofthesefunctions,thedatamodels.forexample,theposition(on/off)ofacircuitbreakerhasanameandisfixed.theservicesfortransferringthedatafromonedevicetoanotherarealsostandardised.forexample,theserviceforsendingatripsignaltoacircuitbreakerandtheserviceforreadingfaultdatafromaprotectivedevicearedefined.iec61850furtherstatestheprotocolswhichimplementbestthesegenericdatamodelsandservices,andthesearemanufacturingmessagespecification(mms),tcp/ipandethernet–aprocesscalledmapping.theconversionfromatextmessageofanapplicationtothebit-streamonthecommunicationwire/cableispurelyapropertyofthecommunicationstack.inthisway,theapplicationsandthestackareseparated.

iec61850standardisesthenameofthedataofautomationfunctions.ithasalistofstandardisednamesofalltheanticipatedfunctionscalledlogicalnodes.atthespecificationstageofasubstationautomationproject,ambiguityormisinterpretationisunlikelytoarisebetweentheconsultantandthetenderers.

inthepast,thedatamodelsinthespecificationwereoftenmadesufficientlygeneralsothatawidevarietyofmanufacturerssupportingdifferentprotocolscouldtender.thestandardiseddatamodelsofiec61850areunderstoodbyallmanufacturersandcanbestatedinthespecification.thesemodelscanbecarriedforwarddirectlyintothedesignstage,savingtimeandreducingerrors.

aniec61850systemcanalsobebuiltupthroughgradualupgrade/replacementofexistingdevices,withoutwaitingforthesubstationtobeextended.thedeviceswouldbeupgradedbaybybay,andallwouldbecommunicatingthroughthestationunit.
5conclusionandoutlook
thebenefitsofthenowcompletestandardiec61850aretangibleinallareasofsubstationautomationandcompliantproductsarecommerciallyavailablein2004.thestandardisinuseamongutilities,consultantsandmanufacturers,andthefirstsystemsarenowbeinginstalled.theprincipleofstandardisingcommunicationhasalsoprovenitselftobefar-reaching.thecommoninformationmodelforthedatainthecontrolcentreisbeingreconciledwiththeiec61850datamodels,andthebenefitoftheutilitiesissmootherdataflowsbetweenthesubstationandthecontrolcentreinthefuture.
